Residential Solar Rate

For Wake EMC members who want to connect their own renewable energy systems, such as solar panels, to Wake EMC’s electrical grid, there is a residential solar rate which can help members save money.

Energy Charges

Members who want to enroll in this rate plan will be billed for energy supplied by WEMC at the applicable retail rate assigned to the account. Energy generated may be used to offset the need for purchased power. All excess generation will be credited to the account at the energy credits listed in this plan.

Solar Monthly Rate Plan

Monthly Facilities Charges:
Up to 25 kW No Charge
25 to 100 kW $7.50 per month
101 to 500 kW $75.00 per month

Monthly Energy Credits:
4.0¢ per kWh
12.0¢ per kWh for on-peak TOU credit

Additional Solar Rate Details and Terms

The size of your renewable system (measured in nameplate rating) must not exceed the smallest of these three limits:

  • Your estimated maximum 15-minute power demand
  • Your Contract Demand (the amount of power you've agreed to in your contract)
  • 500 kilowatts

To ensure safety and reliability, all renewable systems must be equipped with proper safety features, system protection, and power quality equipment that meets the cooperative's standards.

If you want to receive credit for any excess electricity your system generates and sends back to the power grid, you must register your renewable generator with the North Carolina Utilities Commission through their NC-RETS program. Additionally, customers may be eligible to participate in NC GreenPower's renewable generation program for any excess power generated.

Renewable Generation – For purposes of this Rider, Renewable Generation shall be defined as hydroelectric or fueled by trash or methane derived from landfills, hog waste, poultry waste, nonanimal biomass, solar, or wind designed primarily to serve a single-user’s site.

Excess Energy –Member is able to utilize generation in lieu of purchasing from Wake Electric. If generation output is greater than demand, this is then defined as excess energy. The excess energy delivered to the Cooperative shall be defined as energy produced by the consumer’s generator that exceeds the energy demands of the residence at the time it is generated. This excess will be delivered to the electric grid and credited to the account at the avoided cost rate listed in the Rider. If the excess generation creates an overall credit to the account, such credit will be applied to the following month’s billing.

Excess Facilities – Excess Facilities are defined as those facilities that are in addition to those necessary for delivery of service at one point, through one meter, at one voltage, in accordance with the normally applicable rate schedule that the Cooperative must furnish, install, own, and maintain, in order to serve the Renewable Generation.
