Wake Electric Returns Over $2 Million to Members in 2025

In mid-December, Wake Electric sent out over $2 million in capital credits to members in the seven counties we serve. Issuing capital credits is one of the best ways we demonstrate the value of being a cooperative member and our promise to put you first.

What Are Capital Credits?

When you joined Wake Electric, you became more than just a faceless customer. You became a valued member-owner of our electric cooperative. Unlike investor-owned utilities that distribute profits to distant shareholders, Wake Electric operates as a not-for-profit at cost. Margins are the money left after paying expenses; we return it to our members. These payments are called capital credits and depend on how much electricity you used each year. Capital credits don’t just sit on a shelf. Over time, they reduce the amount the cooperative needs to borrow to build, maintain, and expand a reliable electric system, helping keep rates as affordable as possible for everyone.

This Year’s Capital Credit Distribution Includes:

  • Your share of capital credits earned between 2000 and 2024
  • 100% of the credits earned in 2000
  • 1.4636% of the credits earned from 2001 through 2004
Even though those years may seem far away, the capital you contributed then helped strengthen our system for you today. In addition to returning over $2 million to active members, Wake Electric also pays capital credits to the estates of deceased members. This year, about $300,000 of additional funds will go to these estates.
If you are managing the estate of a loved one who was a Wake Electric member, please get in touch with us to find out how to claim their capital credits.

Key Details to Know

  • Eligible members will receive their capital credits by check.
  • Members whose refund is less than $25 will not receive a check this year; instead, their amount will roll over to future capital credit retirements, helping them build toward a larger future payout. This way, members can look forward to a more substantial return in the coming years.
  • If you’ve moved, please make sure your mailing address is up to date so you don’t miss future refunds
