Local 8th Graders Attend NC State and UNC Basketball Camps Thanks to Wake Electric
Two local middle schoolers had the opportunity of a lifetime this June, thanks to scholarships provided by Wake Electric through a statewide youth program focused on basketball, leadership, and personal growth.
Justyce Miles, a rising eighth grader, attended the Wolfpack Women’s Basketball Camp at NC State University. Carter Heath, also heading into eighth grade, took part in the UNC Men’s Basketball Camp in Chapel Hill. Both camps provided young athletes with the opportunity to train on college campuses under the guidance of UNC Men’s Basketball coach Hubert Davis and NC State Women’s Basketball Coach Wes Moore.
These students were selected by a panel of judges from applications evaluated based on criteria such as academic achievements, extracurricular activities, and an essay and short-answer question.
The scholarships covered all expenses for the students, including lodging in the dorms, meals, and registration. While basketball was the main focus, the camps emphasized more than just athletics. Students learned about teamwork, responsibility, and leadership, gaining valuable lessons that will serve them far beyond the court.
Wake Electric participates each year in the Touchstone Energy Sports Camp Scholarship Program, which is coordinated by North Carolina’s electric cooperatives. Each year, electric co-ops across the state select rising eighth graders from their communities to attend the camps. Wake Electric is proud to be part of this effort and looks forward to continuing to support students through programs like this.
