Wake Electric Encourages Energy Conservation as Extreme Temperatures Place High Demand on Grid

Wake Electric is encouraging it’s members to conserve energy by making adjustments to their home energy use, including raising the thermostat and delaying the use of electric appliances because of high demand on the electric grid.

This call for conservation is in response to this week’s forecasted extreme heat wave, which has led to electric generation capacity constraints that could impact our service territory. Putting guardrails in place now to reduce demand for electricity will help stabilize the grid, mitigate the need for more extreme measures and support reliable electricity for all members. Wake Electric asks members for their partnership by reducing energy use, especially from 3 PM to 8 PM today through Thursday of this week, when temperatures are expected to be at their highest.

The highest temperatures are anticipated during the afternoon-evening hours, overlapping with an already high-use period as members go about their daily routines. This combination can lead to a sudden spike in demand, potentially putting grid reliability at risk.

We’re asking members to help reduce strain on the system by making a few simple adjustments:
  • Delay the use of large appliances (such as dishwashers, ovens, and dryers) until after 8 PM.
  • Raise your thermostat by a few degrees during the 3 PM–8 PM window.
  • Turn off non-essential lights and devices during the peak window hours.
  • Pre-cool your home earlier in the day and close blinds or curtains to retain cooler air.
  • Schedule electric vehicle charging for Friday when conditions are expected to improve.

These small steps, multiplied across thousands of homes, can make a big impact in reducing stress on the grid.

Wake Electric thanks its members for taking action to voluntarily conserve energy. Members will be alerted as soon as possible if additional measures are required to protect the electric grid through SmartHub, social media and our website.
