In Memory of Director Reuben Matthews

Longtime Wake Electric director, Reuben Matthews, passed away this past April having served cooperative members for more than three decades.

We are deeply saddened to announce the loss of Wake Electric board member Reuben Matthews who passed away on April 27, 2023. Reuben served on the Wake Electric Board for more than thirty years and served as president from 2015 through 2019 and vice-president from 2006 through 2015.

Reuben was born in Richmond, Virginia and grew up in Middlesex, more specifically Gallberry, in rural North Carolina. Farm life and hard work dominated his youth. Reuben applied the same effort seen in his farm labor to his studies and graduated as a top student from Bailey High School. He then attended Atlantic Christian College and resided in the Middlesex area after graduation.

He went on to work in the accounting and business fields in the textile and plastics industry throughout his career. He was a trustworthy and respected employee and coworker and put his business skills and community involvement to use when he became a member of the Board of Directors for Wake Electric Membership Corporation in 1992. He took great pride in his work with Wake Electric and its members.

“Reuben was not only a friend and colleague, but he was a great addition to our Board and his community,” said Suzy Morgan, Wake EMC Board President. “He was always kind, caring and willing to help anyone in need and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and loved ones.”
