Wake Forest, NC— Wake Electric is having great success with the Fridge and Freezer Farewell program. So far, 38 refrigerators and freezers have been collected from Wake Electric members to be recycled.

Through a partnership with Appliance Recycling Centers of America, Inc. (ARCA), the co-op is offering members the opportunity to earn $50 to let ARCA properly recycle their old, working secondary refrigerator or freezer. All Wake Electric members have to do is call 1.877.341.2310 to schedule to have the unit picked up.

In order to participate in Wake Electric’s Fridge and Freezer Farewell program, you must be a residential electric customer with a valid account number. Refrigerators and freezers turned in for recycling must be secondary units in working condition (cooling), 10-30 cubic feet, owned by the person calling and picked up from the residential address listed on the billing account.

The $50 rebate will be mailed in the form of a check within 4-6 weeks after collection. There is a limit of two appliances per household per year.

By recycling their old refrigerator or freezer, electric consumers can save more than $200 per year on their energy bill. Also, old refrigerators contain more than 120 lbs of recyclable steel, and ARCA will properly recycle these appliances to help save the environment. Each fridge or freezer appliance that is properly recycled through the program will prevent it from entering a landfill.
